Transgrancanaria 2015 wrap-up
Press release: Transgrancanaria & Fredrik Ölmqvist
Despite the incredible temperature contrast, from cold to hot in just a few kilometers; wind and thick calima, nothing could stop
that the Lithuanian Gediminas Grinius marked a new record for this race with a time of 14:23:37 hours and also the Catalonian Núria Picas regained with a mark of 16:53:27 hours. The organisation had offered a reward of thousand euros to the one able to smash the 14 hours and 27 minutes from 2014. The Lithuanian not only improved the mark in 4 minutes but also got a better time beacuse the distance was longer this year, 127 Km. Even more surprising was the second place of the Norwegian, Didrik Hermansen with an excellent time of 14:30:07.
For the first part of the race Didrik Hermansen paced himself and ran together with Swedish runner Johan Lantz, who had been training with Amdahl and Hermansen on Gran Canaria the month prior the race. Sondre Amdahl who finished 4th actually expected Johan Lantz to finish in the top, possibly even winning. But Johan Lantz suffered from back pain early on. He struggled with incredible grit and determination. Despite the pain that he soon understood eventually would force him to withdraw he was feeling strong and overtook most of the top runners during the climb between Teror and Cruz de Tejeda (56-71km). Now on third place with 1K remaining to Cruz de Tejeda the leading duo Yan Long Fei and Sondre Amdahl was just a minute ahead. Then, while running on the asphalt, suddenly his femur bone broke (!!) and he fell to the ground. (Time 07:55 to compare with Long Fei who passed Cruz de Tejeda 07:58). Luckily this happened on the road section and not on a remote mountain section.
Transgracanaria included for second year consecutively in the Ultra Trail World Tour® saw the retirement of a lot of elite runners like Nikki Kimball, Joe Grant, Pau Bartolo and Iker Karrera. The Chinese runner Yan Longfei, who started the race as provisional leader of the Ultra Trail World Tour® was exhausted at El Garañón and leaved.
The Catalonian Nuria Picas is for the moment the one and only female runner winning the 125 twice, putting herself to the same level of the French Sebastien Chaigneau, champion in 2012 and 2013. Núria Picas, finished 14th in the general ranking. The second place in the female category was for the French Caroline Chaverot with a time of 17:16:48. In this edition of The North Face® Transgrancanaria® 2015 we have to underline the role of the Asian runners who made a very good race among the 71 nationalities participating this year. The Chinese Li Dong came third in a race she did not know at all. Another mark of this The North Face® Transgrancanaria® 2015 is the role of the American Anton Krupicka, who finished for the first time a race in the Canary Islands coming sixth in the Transgrancanaria.
